Preventing dental issues and keeping your smile healthy is key to long-term oral health. Our dentists at Bay Dental Group in Sault Ste. Marie perform regular oral examinations and hygiene cleanings.
Oral Examinations
Ideally, you'll see your dentist twice each year for an oral exam. These appointments give them the opportunity to identify any oral health issues and create a plan to treat them accordingly.
During your exam, your dentist will closely examine the health of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. These exams may also include dental X-rays, an oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures.
Oral Cancer Screening
Any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues can be affected by oral cancer. When your dentist examines your mouth, they will check the face, lips, tongue, neck, throat, gums and tissues for any signs of oral cancer that may be difficult to detect with the naked eye.
Oral Health Care at Home
Brushing twice a day for two minutes each time and maintaining a daily flossing routine will help keep your smile healthy between dental appointments.
Hygiene Cleaning
The deep cleaning is performed by your dental hygienist before or after your exam to prevent and treat disease.
To start, the hygienist will use a scaler to eliminate any plaque and tartar buildup. Next, they will use a polisher and coarse toothpaste to remove any remaining stains or plaque. This will be followed by a thorough flossing of your teeth and gums.
Fluoride Treatment
Are you or your child at high risk of tooth decay? A fluoride treatment may also be recommended. This natural mineral can help rebuild the minerals in your tooth enamel and prevent or reverse tooth decay.
